Knowing Jesus as Lord
[Philippans]
Course instructor: Dan Tapia
When people are asked what they hope to gain for themselves in life, most answer "I just want to be happy." To find happiness, many of us flock to the latest self-help book, seminar, or favorite advice columnist. We try with great effort to control the circumstances in our lives but realize that our circumstances still control us. When this realization hits we decide to change jobs, relationships, and for Christians sometimes churches to see if that change will make us happy. So how do we step off the merry-go-round of life that never seems to allow us to reach that brass (happiness) ring?
Let’s face it, the fleeting feeling of exhilaration called happiness is elusive, but biblical joy is not. "Biblical joy, the settled conviction that God sovereignly controls the events of life for believers' good and His glory, is available to all who obey Him." Divine joy is the theme of Philippians. Let’s walk together with the Apostle Paul through this amazing epistle, even as he faced hardship, adversity and imprisonment. Along the way we will discover the wellspring of joy: the knowledge of Jesus as Lord. “Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (3:8 ESV).
