Worshipping Jesus as Lord
[The Psalms]
Course instructor: Paul Dugan
Worship is the whole-hearted response to the majesty and mercy of our Triune God, as Isaiah responded to his vision of the Holy One in the temple (Isaiah 6:1-8). Part of our response to God involves praise and prayer, expressed through the medium of music. The Book of Psalms is the time-tested songbook of the people of God. Unique within the biblical canon, the psalms provide both God’s Word to us, and our words to God. Described by Calvin as “an anatomy of all parts of the soul,” the Book of Psalms gives voice to deeply human cries of praise, thanksgiving, trust, wisdom, and most commonly, lament. This God-directed language is vividly expressed through rich and earthy Hebrew imagery and poetry.
This course provides an introduction to the psalms as dynamic tools for authentic prayer and worship. Participants will engage the rich variety of genres (literary forms) within the Book of Psalms, expand their vocabulary of praise, and explore the many different ways to respond to God in worship. They will learn to honestly come before God in all aspects of the human condition. This involves boldly wrestling with God, pleading with God, lamenting before God, longing for God, and thanking and adoring God.
Authentic worship depends on our knowing Jesus as Lord, and results in our proclaiming Jesus as Lord. It is the sincere hope that this course will not only propel believers into worship but also into mission, as they join with Isaiah in saying, “here I am, send me” (Isaiah 6:8).
